Job Description

The Solutions Lead is a hands-on developer first and foremost, but also spends time allocating and managing development tasks; and providing technical and process guidance and mentoring to less experienced members of the solutions delivery team. They are integral to supporting project managers, solution architects, business analysts and test analysts by ensuring that proposed solutions are deliverable, supportable and testable, that development estimates are accurate, and that the full range of options is always taken into account.

Key Responsibilities

  • To manage a small team of solutions architects, allocating and managing workloads across that team
  • To provide technical and process leadership and serve as a role model
  • Provide day to day mentoring to other team members as requested and required, advising on best practices, application of standards and appropriate implementation choices
  • To lead by example as a hands-on developer, with an average of 75% of time spent on delivery. To ensure code delivered is complete, consistent, meets all required quality standards, and delivers functional and non-functional requirements as agreed
  • To ensure design, development, test and deployment documentation exists to support all developments and changes, in accordance with practices and standards
  • By example, to foster a collaborative environment, and actively motivate the team to work together in an efficient manner, and share lessons learnt - be an advocate for the work of the solutions delivery team across the organisation, communicating benefit delivered by the department
  • Provide deeper technical assistance and support (generally 2nd and 3rd line) to the service delivery team and CircleIT
  • Liaise with external suppliers such as RedHat, MediaGenix and others in order to resolve issues involving the integration platform and supporting services
  • To support the development of best practices through researching, proposing and leading the implementation of industry leading development methodologies and practises within the team
  • Ensure that tools and processes are in place to support development team operations including development environments, code repositories and other tools
  • Ensure that operational processes cover on boarding of new solution architects, as and when necessary
  • As required, help to manage team resources as part of the agile development processes, participating fully in sprint planning, and recommending appropriate team members for tasks
  • To be an advocate for the solutions delivery team across the organisation, communicating benefit delivered by the department

Experience Required

  • Demonstrable leadership experience from similar roles
  • Ability to motivate and inspire a team and act as a role model and mentor
  • Experience working with the JBoss product suite, especially Fuse
  • Excellent knowledge of Apache Camel and integration development
  • Experienced with XML and XSLT, JSON and other information interchange approaches
  • Working knowledge of standard design patterns and approaches to integration development
  • Deep experience using IDEs, code management tools (git), build tools (maven) and ticket management tools (JIRA)
  • Excellent Java programming skills, demonstrating significant experience in a commercial development environment
  • Able to work to a Test Driven Design (TDD) approach, and mentor other team members in the benefits and right ways to implement this approach
  • Previous experience proposing and implementing the structured processes, supporting tools and operating culture required for a world-class development team
  • Experience of delivering within a Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) framework
  • Demonstrable success delivering continuous improvement within a development team, producing products of increasing benefit to business units
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence across all levels within and outside the organisation
  • Ability to establish and build cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts, of varying seniority
  • Ability to manage a variety of work simultaneously and work well under pressure
  • Experience with cloud-based solutions, working on at least one of the "big three" public clouds - AWS, Azure and GCP
